In the last couple of years, we have seen a rise in cloud computing and virtualisation. And training and certification on cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) in particular have enabled teams to innovate in support of their communities.

On light bulb moments and innovating on the cloud - Insights from our AWS Authorised Instructor - Cloud Computing

AWS helps you use the cloud to turn ideas into opportunities—creating new ways to grow, increase efficiency, and serve customers better. And our technical instructor Adrian Smith is a big believer in innovating on the cloud.

Learning from APN Training Partners

The Amazon Partner Network (APN) works with Training Partners like Lumify Work (previously known as DDLS) to ensure that customers can access training courses in their preferred language and location.

Our team coordinates with AWS to address the robust requirements of AWS course delivery, especially for classroom-based training. Many Amazon customers take their training through APN Training Partners like Lumify Work for some key reasons:

AUTHORISED AWS INSTRUCTORS

Courses are delivered by instructors like Adrian who are members of the AWS Authorised Instructor Program. This program ensures that customers experience the same standards of learning, no matter which training organisation they work with.

BREADTH OF EXPERTISE

Lumify Work has partnered with a range of technology vendors, which enables you to work with a single team who can cater to the breadth of your training needs. This allows customers to benefit from an integrated training plan on the technologies they choose.

LOCAL PRESENCE

Lumify Work has AWS authorised trainers as well as course advisors across Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. This means that you can benefit from a team that has local knowledge of the market, culture and employment environment.

CHOICE AND CONVENIENCE

Lumify Work has campuses in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra in Australia. In New Zealand, you can find us in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. In the Philippines, you can find us in Bonifacio Global City. So, we’re able to offer customers more choices on when and where they can take their classroom-based training.

PUBLIC TRAINING SCHEDULE

Together with AWS, we offer public training classes known as Discover Days. These are recommended for individuals looking to explore cloud skills without the need for dedicated private on-site training.

Expertise in a wide range of technologies

He brings his 35 years' breadth of IT experience to the classroom whenever he facilitates cloud computing training sessions. He started the IT industry by completing a B.Sc. in Computer Science.

During his time as a Technical Trainer at Lumify Work, has worked across Microsoft, Google Cloud, and AWS product sets like Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Exchange 2019 back through to Exchange 2000, Windows Server 2019, back through to NT Server 3.51, Windows 10 back through to Windows 95, Hyper-V Server virtualisation, System Center Operations Manager and System Center Configuration Manager, Microsoft PowerShell. He now mainly concentrates on the cloud offerings in AWS and Azure.

As to why people need to learn about AWS cloud computing, Adrian writes:

“People should learn AWS because the future is cloud, with all the benefits it delivers including – Agility, Speed of delivery, Scale, Flexibility, Cost advantage, Consumption Model (you only pay for what you use) and AWS is the major player in this market.”

Walking the talk with cloud infrastructures

Adrian started his career in I.T. as a Systems Analyst working with mainframes. He then moved on to programming Building Control Systems before moving into Network / System Administration and then falling into IT training and IT Management.

While working at Lumify Work Adrian was also seconded to its parent company Dimension Data to help with System Center deployments. A few years ago, he took a break from training to design and install Server solutions around Perth. He is currently a certified AWS Associate Architect and looking to upgrade this certification to Professional level.

So, he is no stranger to the highs and lows that the students experience with their projects. He shares:

“The courses are designed for existing IT people who are moving to the cloud and in particular AWS that need to increase their knowledge base. My favourite thing about AWS cloud training is spotting those light bulb moments when students grasp the new topic for the first time.”

When asked about which AWS cloud computing courses are necessary for people to take, he recommends that:

“If the student just requires an overview, then the AWS Essentials courses are the ones to focus on. But if they require more in-depth training then the AWS Architecture course is a must.”

Life outside of the cloud

Originally from the UK, Adrian moved to Perth in 2004 and lives with his wife who is a primary school teacher and two daughters who are both university students. Outside of Lumify Work, he is passionate about family, fitness and property renovations.

I’m passionate about my family and making sure they enjoy life to the full. I also enjoy keeping fit by playing any sport but mainly hockey, soccer and golf. Over the years, I have also spent a lot of my spare time renovating properties including converting a 19th Century Chapel into our family home.
