The BCorp Assessment Process

What is BCorp, and what does an assessment look like? B Lab is the nonprofit network that drives the B Corp movement. The goal is to change our economic systems by mobilising the community towards collective action to address social and environmental challenges.

Certified B Corporations are leaders in contributing to an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.

Last year, EdVentureCo and its businesses, including Lumify, received certification as a B Corporation by the global network B Lab. The designation recognises our commitment to raising business standards and positively impacting the life and livelihood of communities we serve through education.

To become B Corp-certified, EdventureCo underwent B Lab’s B Impact Assessment (BIA), a rigorous assessment for benchmarking and enhancing a company’s impact performance in critical areas such as governance, workers, community, environment and customers.

To achieve certification, a company must:

  • Exemplify social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or higher and passing the risk review. In addition, multinational corporations must meet baseline requirement standards.

  • Make a legal commitment to change corporate governance structures to be accountable to all stakeholders - not just shareholders.

  • Show transparency on performance measured against B Lab’s standards through their public B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.

EdventureCo achieved an overall score of 88.5 points, well above 80 for organisations seeking certification.

What does BCorp Certification mean for customers?

The Lumify team is working with EdVenture Co to continue pushing initiatives with a positive social and environmental impact.

Our ImppACT team is a group of passionate people from all departments and locations. The team helps drive accountability and continuous improvement in our processes and systems to support BCorp.

The team's name stands for "Information, Making a difference, Planet, People, Action, Community, Technology," reflecting our vision of being "a group of awesome people, coming together to act and impact people and our planet."

As we work towards creating a more positive impact, the team collaborate with all hubs and business units within Lumify and review our processes and practices related to how we treat our employees, the impact our business has on the environment and the community, our transparency, governance and accountability, and using our company as a force for good.

For example, students who book and sit courses on-campus can enjoy quality learning experiences that use sustainable materials and environmentally conscious and energy-efficient practices.

Individuals and teams who engage with Lumify Group can also expect closer collaboration so we can measure longer-term outcomes and material positive change for our students and supply ICT learning outcomes to underrepresented groups.

Lumify has partnered with Women Rising, Microsoft, Dream Collective, AWS and other organisations to use our business as a force for good, support greater diversity and inclusion, and expand professional development and ICT training opportunities. We are proud to support women in IT and leadership roles, students from indigenous communities looking to build their tech skills, and military veterans transitioning to civilian life.

What does it mean for staff?

For members of our team at Lumify, BCorp certification is another way the group exemplifies our values: Live with Spirit, One Lumify, Win with Integrity.

Many in our team already involve themselves with community initiatives. Our assessment and certification show the organisation's alignment with its values.

We recently introduced Volunteer Leave allowing employees to take days off work to volunteer for a registered charity or not-for-profit organisation.

The team also enjoy study leaves that allow them to undertake further studies at recognised educational institutions or a registered training organisation. Lumify has partnered with Women Rising to provide female team members with the confidence, tools, and practical steps to take their leadership to the next level.

Jordan McNamara, Lumify Group’s Head of People and Performance, shares:

“The B Corporation certification is closely aligned with what we value most at Lumify; our people, our community and our planet. This achievement also recognises our dedication to creating a positive impact on the quality of life and livelihood of communities through education.

We are extremely proud to be part of the B Corp Community and remain focused on being better and using our business in a way that positively impacts the future of generations to come.”
