Adopting cloud computing technologies and services offers financial services institutions opportunities to ease customer transactions and processes.

It also supports banks in addressing many security risks and complying with regulatory requirements, such as data privacy and security standards.

These benefits are not lost on leaders within the finance space. According to Accenture, 94% of banking executives project that half or more of their organisation's business will be in the cloud within three years.

But many firms need more tools and skills to map their digital transformation journey in this context and see it through. For some, applying knowledge in ITIL® 4 makes acquiring and managing cloud services more manageable.

Mapping out secure digital transformation in finance

Successful digital transformation requires changing the organisation, culture, technology and processes.

Zac Maufe, Financial Services Industry Solutions for Google Cloud, offers insights on creating a cloud security transformation roadmap to help Chief Information Security Officers, Chief Risk Officers, Chief Compliance Officers, Heads of Internal Audit, and their teams. These insights provide a good use case for ITIL and cloud training - where the framework guides the management of cloud services.

1. Setting your cornerstones

Cornerstones include:

  • Building a common understanding

  • Having an agile mindset - long-term planning with iterative builds

  • Prioritising organisational readiness

  • Implementing dedicated but integrated governance

2. Managing initial phases

These initial phases involve:

  • Defining initial minimum security and configuration standards

  • Communicating with stakeholders, including boards and regulators

  • Determining initial risk and compliance oversight

  • Training and skills development

3. Maturing and accelerating

Based on more data from communication with stakeholders and with more insights from skills training, you can adjust your control and governance structures by:

  • Developing comprehensive security and configuration standards

  • Modernising IT delivery

  • Performing mainstream risk oversight

  • Extending continuous control monitoring

4. Getting into your new steady state

There is broad usage and new process adaptation within your organisation.

  • Interconnecting cloud with other risk programs

  • Staying updated on cloud best practices and revalidating assumptions

  • Driving continuous improvement cycles

  • Managing legacy systems in parallel

Case Study: Google Cloud in banking

ANZ uses Google Cloud's Apigee API Management to improve developer onboarding significantly. Doing so has reduced the tedious steps involved in knowledge transfer. The platform is easy for developers to use and is backed by excellent documentation and video resources that provide clear guidance about executing specific processes and troubleshooting as needed.

Investing in Google cloud training and certifications

Google currently offers three levels of cloud certification: associate, professional, and user.

If you’re new to Google Cloud and cloud computing, we recommend starting your journey by pursuing an associate-level certification. Individuals must also have at least six months of experience building on Google Cloud.

For those pursuing Professional certifications, you should have at least three years of existing industry experience, and at least one year of experience with Google Cloud products is encouraged.

Associate Cloud Engineer

Validate skills in using Google Cloud Console and the command-line interface to perform everyday platform-based tasks to maintain deployed solutions that leverage Google-managed or self-managed services on Google Cloud.

Professional Cloud Architect

Upskill and verify team knowledge in cloud architecture and Google Cloud Platform and your ability to design, develop, and manage solutions to drive business objectives.

Professional Cloud Developer

Gain credentials in building scalable and highly available applications using Google-recommended practices and tools that leverage fully managed services.

Professional Cloud Network Engineer

Validate your ability to implement and manage network architectures in Google Cloud Platform. Requires at least one year of hands-on experience working with Google Cloud Platform and in projects for networking or in cloud teams with architects who design the infrastructure.

Professional Cloud Security Engineer

Validate skills in designing and implementing a secure infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform. Showcase your understanding of security best practices and industry security requirements.

Professional Data Engineer

Demonstrate ability to enable data-driven decision-making through data collection, processing and publishing. Highlight your expertise in leveraging, deploying, and continuously training pre-existing machine learning models.

Acquiring ITIL certifications

A range of ITIL training courses and certification exams are available, from foundation to expert level.

ITIL 4 Foundation

The entry-level certification in the ITIL 4 certification scheme has two options: ITIL 4 Foundation course or ITIL 4 Foundation - Fast Track course for students with some practical working experience in IT and Service Management.

ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) Certification

This certification recognises the value of ITIL, not just for IT Operations, but for all digitally enabled services. To gain certification, one must complete two modules: ITIL Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) and ITIL Leader: Digital and IT Strategy (DITS).

ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) Certification

For IT practitioners who work within technology and digital teams across businesses, this stream provides practical and technical knowledge on how to run successful IT projects, teams and workflows.

ITIL Master Certification

If a candidate completes all five modules and passes the exams - gaining both designations from the two streams - they qualify for assessment to become an ITIL Master.
