Kmart Australia Limited (Kmart) is a leading product development company and a trusted retailer with more than 300 stores throughout Australia and New Zealand. It needed to migrate from its mainframe system to a cloud solution that was more cost-efficient and scalable. Using Amazon Web Services (AWS), they were able to achieve this, increasing their agility and ability to innovate, improving the customer experience and making it easier for employees to perform tasks like conducting bulk orders.

Yellow New Zealand - whose story began in the 1960s as a printing company - is today a 400+ person team of digital media and marketing experts who are passionate about supporting small- and medium-sized businesses. In 2015, they used public cloud offerings from organisations such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver the benefits and capabilities of cloud technologies with minimal technical, financial, and commercial risk.

Globe Telecom, a telecommunications company in the Philippines, changed its business and culture through company-wide cloud skills training that started in 2014 and continues until today. One idea that appeared from this is the GCash app, a fast and secure micropayment service. By 2020, 1 in 3 people in the country had the app. Beyond this, it enabled government and tax payments and ease of transactions for micro and small businesses.

But what IS the AWS culture of innovation about?

When illustrating it for the public sector, the AWS Worldwide Public Sector Digital Innovation Team shared that AWS innovation consists of four pillars: culture, mechanisms, architecture and organisation. Having a strong leadership team and a thorough understanding of the company values will guide decision making. Setting up and constantly iterating mechanisms and processes are critical in addressing recurring business challenges. It is also important for public and private sector organisations to build a technical structure that supports rapid growth. Organisations should also encourage small teams- independent or within bigger departments - to experiment early and often.
