Why study this course

Power BI is an interactive data visualisation software product developed by Microsoft with a primary focus on business intelligence. Power BI lets you connect to and visualise almost any data. Data Storytelling is the art of converting numbers into narratives. Stories that incorporate data are more convincing than those based on anecdotes. Most reports simply present data and then leave it up to the consumer to interpret the data and extract insights from it.

This one-day course will cover Power BI report layouts and structure the agile process to create Power BI data visualisations. It will help attendees to understand the art behind visualisations, the implications behind choosing the right charts, the impact of colour, shape, and size, and finally the use of Power BI custom visuals. The course includes various design patterns of dashboards and reports, as well as best practices for authoring great reports and dashboards for business users.

Important note: Power BI is a Microsoft App that is not currently supported on non-Windows systems (such as Apple Mac).

Who is the course for?

This intermediate level one-day workshop is designed for those with a foundational level knowledge and experience with Power BI who want to take their visualisations to the next level.

Prerequisites

Participants should have completed Power BI Dashboard in a Day (DIAD), Power BI Fundamentals, PL-300T00 - Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst, or have equivalent working experience.

In order to attend this course you must have Power BI Desktop installed on your local desktop or laptop prior to attendance. Download Power BI Desktop from Microsoft here. Power BI accessed through a browser or Microsoft Teams does not have the features and functionality needed to complete this course. Remote connection to your work desktop or laptop is also not suitable.

You must also have R Software installed on your local desktop or laptop. R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. Download R from Microsoft here.

In addition you will need to be able to extract compressed (ZIP) files to your desktop or laptop.

We recommend dual monitors, especially if your primary monitor is a laptop screen.
