According to Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is the framework of best practices, processes and terms that are employed as standards within the project management industry.
It was formalised in 1996 in the Project Management Institute’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). Before this Guide was published, several milestones served as precursors for it. These include the first Project Management Professional (PMP®) credential and certifications awarded in 1984.
The PMBOK has continually been updated to reflect new knowledge, methods and best practices. The American National Standards Institute and the International Organization for Standardization recognise it as the source for project management standards.
The international higher education community and business schools embrace the framework and use it to train project managers.
Project Management Institute (PMI) is the leading professional association for project management. They are the authority for a growing global community of millions of project professionals and individuals who use project management skills. These professionals and “changemakers” collectively work to create better outcomes for businesses, communities and society worldwide.
PMI empowers people to make ideas a reality. Through global advocacy, networking, collaboration, research, and education, PMI prepares organisations and individuals at every stage of their career journey to work smarter so they can drive success in a world of change.
Building on a proud legacy dating to 1969, PMI is a not-for-profit, for-purpose organisation working in nearly every country to advance careers, strengthen organisational success, and enable project professionals and changemakers with new skills and ways of working to maximise their impact. PMI offerings include globally recognised standards, certifications, online courses, thought leadership, tools, digital publications, and communities.
