As more organisations explore how they could tap into Virtualisation and Cloud Computing capabilities, the demand for IT professionals with skills in these areas grows too.

Suppose your organisation is in the early stages of exploring tools for virtualisation. In that case, we share insights on how you can discuss this with your leadership team and learning and development manager.

When it comes to your career growth, you need to be persistent. And your persistence is likely to pay off, especially if your professional goals align with the organisation's growth goals.

Managers are often open to discussing career growth and training because of two reasons:

  • Exceptional businesses invest in employee expertise and engagement
Businesses in New Zealand focus on retaining the right talent to pursue digital transformation. Creating a culture of learning engagement is critical to this. In an IBM study, 84% of best-performing employees said they received the training they needed.

  • Training reduces employee attrition and its impacts
Employee attrition goes beyond human resources. It has recruitment costs, and it impacts operations. According to a Harris Poll, 70% of staff members would be at least somewhat likely to leave their current organisations and take a job with one known for investing in employee development and learning.

Having a VMware Cloud Training Conversation with Your Manager

Shirley Arteaga of VMware shares three tips to help you prepare for a conversation with your manager about cloud computing and virtualisation training.

  1. Be future-focused
New Year reflections or not, it's good to reflect on the growth opportunities in your role. These can come in the form of virtualisation or cloud migration projects. You can also find these opportunities within your team's structure.

Great organisations and managers constantly work to identify high-performing individuals who can shape the business in the future.

  2. Look for cross-training opportunities
Look for areas outside of your specialisation that can complement your current work. Those focused on cloud computing can consider leadership, project management or even cybersecurity courses.

Cross-training gives you a well-rounded understanding of the problems and the workable solutions.

  3. Get your numbers ready
With rising costs, managers are keen to ensure they invest time and money in the right priorities. Moreover, they want to ensure that these priorities offer an excellent return on investment (ROI).

Always align your VMWare cloud training with your organisation's key performance indicators (KPIs). KPIs can include the number of certifications or improved rates of productivity or efficiency in your team. You should also be able to provide details on the cost of training and the potential ROI. This ROI can include improved morale in your team or the ability to step up your virtualisation game or take on more of a specific type of project.

You can get started by creating a bulleted list of points about your personal goals and the business. Create a list based on each tip and validate these with data and research.

Requesting training can seem daunting, especially when budget allocations are involved. But doing your homework can give you the confidence to discuss VMWare cloud training with your manager.
