But seven years on, in 2023, the work continues. The challenge of closing the digital skills gap shows no signs of letting up. Just as our commitment to our mission continues - that of enabling people to thrive in the digital landscape of tomorrow.

As organisations move their IT infrastructure to the cloud to enjoy the benefits of increased productivity and scalability, adopting cloud computing, machine learning, data analytics, and cybersecurity will call for new roles, skills, and responsibilities. And this increased adoption will contribute to economies of all sizes. These technical roles are essential for organisations to remain competitive and productive as the global economy slows.

The Impact of AWS Training and Certification on Organisations

SkillSoft's 2022 IT skills and Salary Report found that business leaders and heads of IT departments agree: IT training benefits both organisations and employees.

Leaders and staff see the measurable, positive impact of cloud computing training.

Individuals who changed employers in 2022 said that the following were factors for their decisions to change jobs:

  • an increase in compensation (38%)

  • lack of training, growth, and development (33%)

Why are IT professionals motivated to undergo training? Here is what they said, according to the Skillsoft report:

  • to prepare for critical projects, such as migration, deployment, or update (31%)

  • to access career advancement opportunities (21%)

Data shows that AWS Certifications are in demand, with four among Asia-Pacific’s top 10 IT certifications, according to Skillsoft.

Leaders should note that IT professionals have ambitious certification goals in 2023: 85% are pursuing certifications now or in the year ahead. This figure translates to an average of three certifications per person.

Without a doubt, organisations benefit from having certified employees. The Skillsoft report says:

  • 96% of IT decision-makers believe certified employees add value

  • 45% of leaders believe it provides a boost in productivity

  • 44% of leaders see how training results in an increased ability to meet client requirements

  • 41% believe certified staff are instrumental in closing the skills gap

When asked to put a dollar figure on the value a certified employee adds to their organisation, 72% of IT decision-makers estimated $10,000 or more in additional value compared to non-certified employees. This amount climbed from last year’s estimate of 64%.
